Materials can also be classified according to their mechanical properties -resistance to loads or force-, chemical properties -composition-, or physical properties -which manifest in response to stimuli such as heat, electricity, or light-.<br \/>\nTake sheep&#8217;s wool thermal insulation, for example: it is extracted directly from nature, but it is manufactured. Its production uses 75% less energy than other mineral-based materials and reduces CO2 emissions by 85% -data obtained from <a href=\"https:\/\/wool4build.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">wool4build<\/span><\/a>-, a relevant factor for #sostenibilidad. It can also absorb up to 22% of water relative to its own weight, compared to just 0.5% for mineral wool. This physical property is called hygroscopicity, and it is found in any material capable of storing moisture from the surrounding air -or moisture present in liquid form- and then releasing it when atmospheric humidity is too low. The ideal relative humidity in our indoor spaces is between 40% and 60%: if it rises above 60%, these materials can absorb the excess; if it drops below 40%, they can release what is needed, making them excellent humidity regulators. We can observe these same properties in a wooden structure, a clay render, the cotton upholstery of a sofa, linen curtains, the #fibranatural clothing we wear, and cotton towels \u2014 all of which help keep our #casassaludables and our #medioambiente healthy.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whether we&#8217;re renovating a home, simply painting, buying a piece of furniture, or introducing new textiles, we should take into account all the factors mentioned above -namely, their mechanical, chemical, and physical properties- but also whether their production involves toxic compounds or undignified working conditions, whether they are renewable and environmentally friendly, whether their manufacturing involves a low level of industrial processing, low energy consumption and low associated emissions, whether they are local -meaning they don&#8217;t require long transport distances-, whether they are recyclable and, above all, #biodegradable. Phew! Quite a few factors to consider.<br \/>\nThese descriptions and characteristics aren&#8217;t always visible or easy to find. So if we want to stay informed, we need to be rigorous, demand data and information, and, when in doubt, reject a product until we&#8217;re sure that what we&#8217;re buying is safe and respectful.
