Glaciers and polar ice caps are the largest reserve of fresh water that exists. They are considered water supply deposits for the spring and summer months, and they feed aquifers, rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
Despite making up only 3% of all existing water -the remaining 97% is salt water- they drastically determine the productivity of a region and the survival of its ecosystems.
Unfortunately, records from the last 20 years are showing an accelerated and unprecedented reduction and loss of ice surface due to anthropogenic global warming -caused by humans-, whose main cause is greenhouse gas emissions. Although reality demands urgent land management measures to mitigate its effects, we see how COP 25 and its slogan “time to act” are nothing but mirages in the desert and minimal measures -ridiculous, laughable even, though more tears and anguish, I would say- a whole sham event backed by multinationals that pollute and pocket millions of dollars at the expense of a heritage that does not belong to them.
In the first seven months of 2019, a review of 11,602 articles on “Climate Change” and “Global Warming” led to a 100% consensus among scientific researchers on anthropogenic global warming. On 28 November 2019 the European Parliament approved a resolution declaring a Climate and environmental emergency in Europe and around the world, and 2019 marked a record increase in carbon dioxide, which shows that the Paris Agreement is fading away.
What is it about the concept of Emergency that isn’t understood?
According to the Real Academia Española, it is a situation of danger or disaster that requires immediate action, and even though data is published, consequences are made evident and changes are recommended, nothing -or almost nothing- is done.
I would say it is the laziness of many when it comes to stepping outside what we understand as our comfort zone, and the excessive ambition of others. Our lifestyle -consuming, indulging and celebrating waste 24 hours a day, fashion, triviality, selfishness and lack of empathy- is taking too high a toll, and from this voracious appetite for consumerism we will move to a frustrating state of deprivation in a very short time.
Progress that does not consider and respect nature is not progress, it is regression.
“A year of snow, a year of plenty.” To speak of snow is to speak of water, and to speak of water is to speak of life, and every living being depends on it.
Let’s leave this false progress behind and take care of the planet.
